How to locate your customer shut off water valve
Do you know how to detect a leaking toilet?
Leaking toilets can be a slow leak or be a constant running leak. It is estimated a leaking toilet could waste between 2,000 Gallons per month to 20,000 gallons per month, depending on the issue.
Those with electronic meters are encourages to sign up for the EyeOnWater app and set a leak alert at 1 gallon per/hour. If the meter detects a constant flow of 1 gallon or more per hour, for 24 hours straight, it will send you an alert.
Those in the condos do not have electronic meters so the best practice is to perform a test at least twice per year with your toilets.
- Drop food coloring in each toilet tank.
- Wait 30 minutes without flushing.
- After 30 minutes, if the water in the toilet bowl turns color, your toilet is leaking, you need to replace the parts inside your toilet tank.
Repair kits are available at most hardware stores. The most common causes of leaking toilets are the flapper valve, flush handle and overflow tube.
If you are unsure of how to repair your toilet, hire a licensed plumber.

Single family homes with the electronic water meters can sign up for the EyeOnWater app and view their water usage. Customers on the app can also set up leak alerts. When there is continuous flow for 24 hours, a leak alert will be emailed or texted to you to let you know.
It is important to identify leaks early to save water. Texas water utilities reported over 30.6 billion gallons of water lost due to breaks and leaks in 2021.
